Pesky Gremlins Comic 735 – Recipe for Disaster

Recipe for Disaster

The gremlin, Worse, stands ready and able to deliver on his threat of “much worse” if Elmo challenges him yet again by uttering the phrase: “How could this get any worse?”

…and here is a larger version of Elmo’s put-upon classic Corvette.   Sitting on its four flat tires and in an ever expanding puddle of oil, and perhaps other vital automotive fluids, it looks sad.  But, it could still be worse

From a technical point of view, the corvette background is a conglomeration of CGI and old-fashioned hand drawing. In fact, it is actually 4 CGI images combined and overlaid with some hand-drawn and painted bits. That might sound like a lot of work, but it’s not. You can actually generate several images at a time! The back wall was left out to speed up the renderings and de-clutter a little bit of the background.

  1. Someone doesn’t know when to quit!

That does sound like a lot of work, but you’ve obviously gotten it to work well together for the final image.

    1. Elmo really needs to just be quiet!

It sounds like a lot of work, but the computer does almost all of it. It only takes my computer about 5 minutes to draw and color an image. It also generates both a color image and a line drawing in that rendering. I just have to save the images as separate files. The 4 images generated for this picture were:
      1. garage background (no Corvette)- Color
      2. garage background (no Corvette) – Line Drawing
      3. Corvette – Color
      4. Corvette – Line Drawing
The car was done separately because the flats lowered the car quite a bit.
All that I had to draw was the oil puddle and the flat part to the tires.

Total time including the computer renderings: about 30 minutes.
…and of course while the computer is crunching away, I am working on something else.

  2. Yes his car could be polka dotted!

    1. That’s a great idea. I will have to save that one for Worse’s next visit. 🙂

  3. When digging a hole there comes a time to stop digging.😃

    1. For a compulsive digger, like Elmo, it’s hard to put the shovel down.
