Pesky Gremlins Comic 148 – Rumpler

Rumpler

Fubar snickers at his imaginary adversaries expense.

Ok, I admit this one is a little out there, but it’s based on a real experience.   Years ago, I was looking at a book about the aircraft of  World War I with my young son.  It was a pretty detailed book and had hundreds of different types of airplanes of that era.  My son enjoyed looking at the pictures and asking me what kind of plane he pointed at.   This went on without any real notable reaction on his part, even through the various Fokkers, until we came to the Rumplers.   Something struck him as absolutely hilarious about the name “Rumpler”.    It was some time before we could look at that book again without him giggling.

So needless to say, there was a real Rumpler observation airplane that participated in the first World War.  What you might not know is that the pinkish-purple camouflage, that appears in frame 3 apparently was a real thing.   I found numerous examples of this color scheme while looking for a suitable example to draw this this strip.  Now, I am not trying to make this silly story historically accurate, but who could resist putting a cartoon like paint scheme in a cartoon?  Not me.

And that’s not the only brightly colored cartoon-like aircraft that I found while looking for inspiration for the rest of this story.

  1. It is becoming increasingly obvious that when the Red Baron shows up he will be flying a giant pizza box.

    1. Shhh! Don’t give away the plot. 🙂

Actually, there is something to that. There will be more boxes….
