The Direct Approach
Elmo is probably reasoning that if Gen is a robot, that she will follow Asimov’s three laws of robots.
Which are:
- A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
- A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
- A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
In which case, if Gen where a robot following Asimov’s laws, she would be compelled to correctly answer Elmo’s question.
That is IF Gen is really a robot.

Actually, she might not be so sure as to Elmo’s status on the food chain and just slap the fire out of him.

Yeah, it’s probably not a good idea to sneak up on someone while they are working late and accuse them of being a robot. Robot or not, there will likely be consequences.
